Your Driving Test (Road Test)

Two Options

You can either take your driving test at DPS (paid for by your tax dollars) or at certain driving schools (such as Quad Cities in Duncanville, which charges $50 to test in their vehicle, $60 in yours -- they give you two attempts for your money). Taking your test at a driving school is generally a bit less stressful, and involves a lot less waiting around. But then you still need to bring the sealed envelope they give you with your test results to the DPS in order to actually receive your license.

DPS Appointment

No matter which option you choose, you will need to make an appointment with DPS. You will want to do that well in advance because of the long wait time for those appointments (can be 6-8 weeks). To do this, go to the Texas DPS Scheduler website and enter your information. (Or you can attempt to book a same-day appointment with DPS by following these instructions.) If you want to schedule your driving test with DPS, look for the “Road Skills Test” category and choose “Class C.” If you plan to take your driving test with a driving school and bring the results envelope to DPS, choose “CHANGE, REPLACE OR RENEW TEXAS DL/PERMIT” under the “Driver License Services” category.

Impact Texas Video

In either case, you will need to register for and watch the free Impact Texas Drivers video and print the course completion certificate. If you took a 6-hour adult driver's ed course, watch this 1-hour video. If you took a 32-hour teen driver's ed course, watch this 2-hour video (even if you have already turned 18!). Bring your printed completion certificate with you to DPS if you take your driving test with them, or bring it to the driving school if you will be taking your test there (they will put it in the sealed envelope they will give you to bring to DPS). The certificate expires in 90 days, so you don’t want to watch it too early.
